A.	The TESTING (v34-36)

1.	 First Attempt (v15-17)

a.	Who?  The Pharisees (v15)

b.	What?  A political question (v16-17)

c.	Why?  Their goal was to trap Jesus (v15)

2.	Second Attempt (v23-33)

a.	Who?  The Sadducees (v23)

b.	What? A theological question (v24-28)

3.	Third Attempt (v34-36)

a.	Who? (v34-35)

1)	The Pharisees are again behind this test

2)	This time they send a lawyer who would have been an expert in the Mosaic Law

b.	Why? They heard that Jesus’ had silenced the Sadducees (v34)

c.	What? (v36)

1)	This is another theological question

2)	Which is the greatest commandment?

a)	There were 248 affirmative commands

b)	There were 365 negative commands

c)	There were heavy and light commands
B.	The TEACHING (v37-40)

1.	You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind (v37-18)

a.	 Shema

1)	The Shema included Deuteronomy 6:4-9; 11:13-21; and Numbers 15:37-41

2)	Shema is Hebrew for “hear”

3)	Parts of the Shema were copied on small pieces of parchment and placed in phylacteries that were worn on the foreheads and arms (Deuteronomy 6:8)

4)	Parts of the passage were placed in mezuzahs attached to doorposts (Deuteronomy 6:9)

b.	Love

1)	“Love” speaks of an act of the mind and will showing a determined care for someone

2)	It is the Hebrew equivalent for the New Testament word, “agape”

3)	This word is in contrast to the Greek word phileo which speaks of an emotional love; and eros which speaks of sensual love
